Custom Canva Guides Tutorial

Did you know you can unlock Canva's guides and move them wherever you actually want? Not just wherever the even grid decides to put them.

I use this constantly for anything I design over and over, YouTube banners, templates, the same layout again and again. Here's how.

Step 1: Turn on rulers and guides

Go to File → Rulers and Guides → Show Rulers and Guides. You'll get rulers along the edges, similar to what you'd see in Word.

Step 2: Add guides

Go to Add Guides. Canva defaults to an even grid, 12 columns, 3 columns, or a 3x3 grid, or you can go Custom and pick your own column and row count.

Here's the bit people miss: those guides come in perfectly even. If your safe zones or layout spots aren't evenly spaced, don't panic, that's not the end of the story.

Step 3: Unlock them

Right after you hit Add Guides, a small message pops up: "Guides added, unlocked." Click it. If you miss it (it disappears quickly), go back to File → Rulers and Guides and untick Lock Guides.

Once unlocked, you can grab each guide line and drag it exactly where you want.

Step 4: Move them to match your layout

Drag each purple line to line up with whatever you actually need, your safe zones, your logo placement, wherever your layout repeats. They'll stay exactly there, not snapped back to even spacing.

Step 5: Lock them back in

Once they're positioned, lock them again so you don't accidentally bump them while designing. File → Rulers and Guides → Lock Guides (or the shortcut, Control + Alt + Semicolon).

Step 6: Reuse them

Add a new page and your guides are already there, exactly where you set them. Drop in your logo or elements and they'll snap to your custom guides, not Canva's default centre lines.

The short version

Add guides, unlock them, drag them to where you actually need them, lock them back in. If you use the same layout repeatedly for your business, this is one of those small things that saves you real time every single time.
